This feature is currently being rolled out across Float. If you don’t see it in your account yet, it will be available to your team in the coming weeks - stay tuned! For more details, see the Access roles FAQ.
Until then, see the Access rights article for how existing permission levels work.
The default Resource Manager access role is built for scheduling people across the company. It’s meant for people who plan and balance workloads, such as resource planners, capacity leads, or studio managers.
What Resource Managers can do
The default Resource Manager access role allows you to:
See people and projects
Resource Managers see every person in the company, every non-draft project, and any draft projects they own. They can open the People and Projects pages, see role placeholders, and edit their own account details.
Schedule anyone on any project they can see
Resource Managers can create, edit, and delete allocations.
Edit project details and project work
On projects they can see, Resource Managers can edit project details, and create, edit, and delete tasks, phases, and milestones. They can also add tasks to a locked task list when scheduling or logging time.
Manage time off
When time off approvals are off, Resource Managers create and edit time off for themselves and their direct reports. When it’s on, they request their own time off, edit their own requests until they’re approved, approve time off for their direct reports, and create, edit, and delete time off for their direct reports.
Track time
Resource Managers can log time for themselves on any project they can see. They can see logged time that is their own or on projects they own, are on the team of. They can edit and delete only their own logged time and override the time-tracking lock period.
Set statuses
Resource Managers set schedule statuses for themselves and their direct reports.
Use views
Resource Managers create personal views and shared company views. They can edit and delete only the views they created.
Use reports and pages
Resource Managers can open Schedule, People and Projects pages, people reports, project reports, People operations dashboard, and the time logging pages.
What Resource Managers can’t do
By default, a Resource Manager can’t:
Create or delete projects.
Create, edit, or delete people.
Manage project expenses, estimates, or project templates.
See cost rates, bill rates, rate cards, project financial budgets, or finance reports.
Edit or delete anyone else’s logged time, even on projects they can see.
Open the Projects finance dashboard, Company settings, or any admin settings page.
Manage or assign access roles, add additional permissions, or assign direct reports on the Manages tab.
Assign the Resource Manager role
To assign access roles, you need the Assign access roles and overrides permission. Account Owners and users with the default Admin access role have it by default, and they can grant it to others as needed.
Assign the Resource Manager role to a person
To assign the Resource Manager access role to a person:
Go to the People page.
Select the person and open the Access tab on their profile.
Select Resource Manager from the access role dropdown.
Review the permissions and adjust them if needed.
Click Update person. If you’re inviting someone new, click Update & invite person.
To assign the Resource Manager access role to several people at once:
Select them on the People page
Click Edit
Under Field, choose Access role
Select Resource Manager
Save with Update
Assign the Resource Manager role to a guest
To assign the Resource Manager access role to a guest:
Go to Company settings > Admin > Guests.
Click the Invite button.
Enter their name and email address.
Select Resource Manager from the access role dropdown.
Review permissions and adjust them as needed.
Save with Invite.
📝Note: Permissions that depend on a person record, such as Self or Managed, don’t apply to guests. Some Resource Manager permissions, like time off for the people they manage, won’t take effect for a guest.
Assign individual permission overrides
On a Starter plan, you can’t edit the default Resource Manager access role, but you can still add permissions to individual people. To do that, you need the Assign access roles and overrides permission. Account Owners and users with the default Admin access role have it by default, and they can grant it to others as needed.
To customize permissions of team members with the Resource Manager access role:
Go to the People page.
Select the person you want to update and open the Access tab of their profile.
Add additional permissions as needed.
Save with Update person.
💡 Here’s a tip: If most of your Resource Managers need the same exceptions, such as viewing rates for budget planning, consider a custom access role instead of editing the default. Custom roles are available on Pro and Enterprise plans.
Customize the default Resource Manager role (Pro and Enterprise)
On Pro and Enterprise plans, you can add or remove permissions from default access roles, like Resource Manager. Your changes apply to everyone assigned to it. To do that, you need the Configure access roles permission. Account Owners and users with the default Admin access role have it by default, and they can grant it to others as needed.
Go to Company settings > Access rights.
Select Resource Manager.
Add or remove permissions as needed.
Click Update access role.
An edited default role shows as Default (updated). To undo your changes, open the role’s action menu and select Reset defaults.
