Import projects

You’ll be prompted to choose between two import methods:

  • Upload a file using the CSV template

  • Sync with another app to connect your existing project management tool

Check our integrations page for a list of supported tools.

💡 Here's a tip: If your team uses a platform that does not integrate directly with Float, try importing your data using the API or Zapier.

Upload projects via CSV template

Uploading a CSV file is the best option if your projects currently live in a spreadsheet or in a tool that does not integrate directly with Float.

To upload your projects using a spreadsheet:

  1. Click Download project template.

  2. Open the file in Excel or Google Sheets.

  3. Complete the template file with project details.

  4. Click Upload CSV file.

  5. Select the file you want to import.

💡 Here's a tip: If you already have some projects in Float and want to include them in the template, check Pre-populate with your existing projects.

Required and optional fields

The project CSV template contains ten columns. Each column maps directly to a project setting in Float.

The Project name is the only required field. Each row must include a project name for the import to succeed.

Other project details that you can add are:

  • Project code - A unique identifier; the same code can’t be used for multiple projects.

  • Client - The client associated with the project. You can use an existing client or add a new one.

  • Stage - To upload a project with a specific stage, the stage must already exist in Float. Stages are managed in Team settings > Projects.

  • Notes - Internal notes for the project.

  • Tags - To add multiple tags, separate them with a comma.

  • Budget (total hours) - The total number of hours budgeted for the project.

  • Non-billable (Y) - Type Y to set the project as non-billable. If the project is billable, leave the field blank.

  • Project Owner Email - The email address of the project owner. The person must already exist in Float with this email on their profile.

  • All PMs have edit rights (Y) - Type Y to allow managers with the 'manage projects' permission to edit this project. Leave it blank otherwise.

Additional notes

  • Project phases and tasks cannot be imported via CSV.

  • There is a limit of a maximum of 500 projects per upload.

  • Do not rename, remove, or add columns to the template. Altering or adding columns to the template will result in an error when uploading.
