This feature is currently being rolled out across Float. If you don’t see it in your account yet, it will be available to your team in the coming weeks - stay tuned! For more details, see the Access roles FAQ.
Until then, see the Access rights article for how existing permission levels work.
The default Admin access role gives users broad control over your Float account. It’s meant for the people who set up and run Float day-to-day, such as operations leads, finance owners, or IT admins.
What Admins can do
The default Admin access role allows you to:
Manage admin settings
This covers work schedule, currencies, time tracking, guests, time off, projects, statuses, tags, departments, activity, and share links.
Work with company data
Admins can view, edit, and delete people, projects, allocations, tasks, phases, milestones, time off, and logged time entries. They also manage project templates, estimates, expenses, schedule statuses, and saved views, including views created by other people. Admins can override the time tracking lock period. They can connect to MCP.
Work with finance
Admins can view and edit cost rates and bill rates, view budgets, reports, and dashboards, including finance details.
Configure Data studio
Admins can add, edit, and delete roles, clients, and rate cards.
Manage access
Admins can configure access roles and assign any access role in the company. They can also give individuals additional permissions.
What Admins can’t do
Some actions are reserved for the Account Owner. By default, an Admin can’t:
Edit the company name or URL, transfer ownership, cancel the subscription, or delete the company.
Set up integrations, generate the API key, or manage team notifications.
Assign the Account Owner role or edit the Account Owner’s permissions.
Manage plans and billing or manage security settings unless given separate permissions that can be added to the default Admin role or to an individual’s account if needed.
Assign the Admin role
To assign access roles, you need the Assign access roles and overrides permission. Account Owners and users with the default Admin access role have it by default, and they can grant it to others as needed.
Assign the Admin role to a person
To assign the Admin access role to a person:
Go to the People page.
Select the person and open the Access tab on their profile.
Select Admin from the access role dropdown.
Review the permissions and adjust them if needed.
Click Update person. If you’re inviting someone new, click Update & invite person.
To assign the Admin access role to several people at once:
Select them on the People page
Click Edit
Under Field, choose Access role
Select Resource Manager
Save with Update
Assign the Admin role to a guest
To assign the Admin access role to a guest:
Go to Company settings > Admin > Guests.
Click on the Invite button
Enter their name and email address
Select Admin from the access role dropdown.
Review permissions and adjust them as needed
Save with Invite
Assign individual permission overrides
On a Starter plan, you can’t edit the default Admin role, but you can still add permissions to individual people. To do that, you need the Assign access roles and overrides permission. Account Owners and users with the default Admin access role have it by default, and they can grant it to others as needed.
To customize permissions of team members with the Admin access role:
Navigate to the People page
Select the person you want to update and open the Access tab of their profile
Add additional permissions as needed
Save with Update person
💡Here's a tip: If most Admins need the same exceptions, such as a finance Admin who also manages billing, consider a custom access role instead of editing the default. Custom roles are available on Pro and Enterprise plans.
Customize the default Admin role (Pro and Enterprise)
On Pro and Enterprise plans, you can add and remove permissions on the Admin role. Your changes apply to everyone assigned to it. Account Owners and users with the default Admin access role have it by default, and they can grant it to others as needed.
Go to Company settings > Access rights.
Select Admin.
Add or remove permissions as needed.
Click Update access role.
An edited default role shows as Default (updated). To undo your changes, open the role’s action menu and select Reset defaults.
Additional notes
Currently, only the Account Owner and the default Admin role can connect to MCP. Custom roles, including Admins with modified permissions, cannot.
