For a quick overview, check the Time tracking settings video guide.
Time tracking features are available on the Pro and Enterprise plans.
Your team's Account Owner and Admins can manage time tracking settings in Team settings > Time tracking.
Time tracking settings control:
Whether your team can log actual hours
Whether time is logged automatically
When logged time can no longer be edited
Log time
With the Log time setting, you can choose whether your team can log time (record actual hours worked).
If time logging is disabled, your team cannot access the Log time/Log team pages, and all reports show the scheduled time only.
This setup works well for teams that use Float purely for planning on the Schedule.
If time logging is enabled, your team can log their actual hours on the Log time/Log team pages, and reports include Logged, Logged vs Scheduled, and Past logged + Future scheduled options.
This setup is ideal for teams that need to track actuals for billing, payroll, or performance reporting.
Automatic time logging
Automatic time logging lets you log time for your team automatically based on what has been scheduled.
This feature is designed for teams where scheduled time is assumed to be worked by default.
When Automatic time logging is enabled, Float automatically logs all log time suggestions for the selected period.
Log time suggestions are the unlogged scheduled hours shown on the Log time and Log team pages. These suggestions are based on the Schedule. For example, if someone is scheduled for 3 hours on a given day, a 3-hour log time suggestion appears for that day. Log time suggestions can be logged directly, edited, or deleted as needed.
With Automatic time logging, you can choose when time is logged by setting how many days after the end of a week or month it should run. On the selected day, all remaining log time suggestions are logged automatically between 6 and 7 am in your team’s timezone.
If a team member manually logs time based on a suggestion or deletes a suggestion, automatic time logging will not log that time again. Once time is logged, either automatically or manually, it can still be edited unless Lock logged time settings are enabled.
Automatic time logging is designed for teams that need a complete and accurate record of all scheduled hours. It works best for teams where scheduled time is assumed to be worked by default, and time is only adjusted when reality differs from the plan.
Lock logged time
Lock logged time setting prevents changes to logged hours after a defined period, helping ensure accurate reporting and billing.
When Lock logged time is enabled, users with Member access rights can no longer add new log time entries or edit existing ones for locked periods.
You can choose whether to lock time weekly, monthly, or yearly, and set how many days after the end of the selected period logged time should be locked.
Once enabled, a lock icon appears next to locked dates on the Log time and Log team pages. Members won’t be able to log or edit any time before the locked date.
For dates that are still open, an open lock icon is shown. For these dates, Members can continue to log and edit time as needed.
Example workflow
A consulting agency might:
Enable Log time.
Turn on Automatic time logging to log all scheduled hours weekly.
Lock logged time 3 days after each week ends.
Review Logged vs Scheduled in Report before invoicing clients.
This setup ensures:
All scheduled hours are captured
Adjustments are made before finalization
Historical time records remain accurate and audit-ready
Using these settings together helps maintain a consistent, reliable time tracking process in Float.
