What’s Changed?

Starting August 27th, 2024, each Float plan includes a set number of Placeholders at no additional cost. This update is intended to improve your team's planning workflow and provide more flexibility before allocating work to your team. We've made a few changes to how Placeholders work in Float, namely:

  • Email and Access Rights: Placeholders can no longer have an email added or access rights set. If you need to give a specific person access to a Placeholder, you can always change it to an Employee or Contractor.

  • Distinct Avatar: Each Placeholder will now automatically have a diamond icon set as the avatar, making them easily distinguishable. This visual cue is intended to help you quickly identify and manage Placeholders across Float.

Placeholders are designed to serve as initial building blocks when scoping work. They allow you to map out necessary resources at the early stages before you typically assign the work to your team. We have a few use cases in mind:

  • Mapping Out Future Work: Placeholders allow you to outline work and roles that aren't yet ready to assign to your team, such as work waiting for approval or projects in early planning stages.

  • Capturing Work for Potential Hires: You can use placeholders to represent roles intended for future team members, helping plan and visualize future hires.

  • Managing Non-Human Resources: Placeholders can represent resources like vehicles, equipment, or rooms, which are essential for your projects but are not tied to individual People.

Legacy Placeholders

If your team was using Placeholders before this change, they'll continue to function as they did before with a label indicating they're a Legacy Placeholder. Any new Placeholders you create will be limited from setting an email or assigning access rights.

You can distinguish Legacy Placeholders by their avatar. Legacy Placeholders will not have the unique diamond icon. On the People page, they'll also have a legacy indicator in the Type column.

Next Steps

These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to make Placeholders a fundamental tool for early and flexible planning in Float. This update is just the first of many designed to assist your team in planning more flexibly.

We are always keen to hear your feedback to improve Float continually. If you have any questions or would like to share feedback, please reach out to our Support team.
